EICR – What Do They Check?

An eicr what do they check(also known as an Electrical Installation Condition Report, or fixed wire testing) is a routine inspection of the hardwired electrical systems in your property. This includes the consumer unit (fuse box), switches, sockets, lights and wiring. It is designed to identify any damage, faults or wear and tear that could cause a risk of fire or injury.

It is recommended that homeowners have an EICR carried out every 10 years, or following a change of occupancy. Landlords and Houses of Multiple Occupancy should have one carried out every five years. To conduct an EICR, a qualified electrician will disconnect the main power to the electrical system and check it based on the standards set by the IET’s Wiring Regulations. They will test for:

The results of an EICR are shown in the form of a pass or fail. A pass means the system is safe, and a failing result means that there are issues with the electrical system that should be addressed. Any work that needs to be done will need to be completed within 28 days unless the electrician specifies a shorter period in their report.
